Gum disease is one of the most common oral health troubles, and if left untreated, it can lead to bad breath, bleeding, gum recession, tooth sensitivity, loose teeth, and eventually tooth loss.
We believe in preventing all dental diseases, and an important part of that is undertaking regular cleaning with the hygienist to maintain a beautiful and healthy smile. The hygienist removes harmful plaque that settles on the teeth and gums, as well as hardened build-ups, like tartar, below the gum line.
Our hygienists can offer you everything from a simple scale and polish to a far more bespoke treatment program involving in-depth cleaning of your teeth and gums broken down over a series of visits – this is ideal for those patients who suffer from more advanced gum disease.
Treatment journey
Your visit will last between 20 and 30 minutes. During this visit, the hygienist will talk to you about how you clean at home, and then she will check the health of your teeth and gums.
She will then go on to clean them very thoroughly, followed by a polish.
She will end the visit by giving you detailed instructions on how to improve your cleaning routine at home, which will include a demonstration with any recommended cleaning aids, like tepe brushes or floss.
If you do suffer from advanced disease or have a large amount of tartar built up on your teeth, she may suggest the cleaning is done slowly over a number of visits, each visit focusing on a single area of your mouth, allowing her to be much more thorough. Stain removal
Teeth can build up with stains because of dietary influences like tea, coffee and red wine, as well as lifestyle habits like smoking.
The hygienist can spend time thoroughly removing all the surface staining that has built up, without any damage to the enamel of your teeth.
Frequently asked questions
Why should I see the hygienist?
In order for your mouth to be in the best state of health, a joint effort must be made between you, at home, and the hygienist. Her job is to get into all the areas you cannot reach yourself so your mouth always remains as clean as possible. By way of regular professional cleaning, we can reduce the number of bacteria in your mouth, reducing, in turn, the likelihood of you suffering from gum disease. If you do suffer from gum disease, then regular cleaning will stop it from getting worse and reduce the chances of you losing your teeth.
Do I need to be registered with the practice to visit the hygienist?
No, not necessarily. You can come and see the hygienist even if you don’t see any of the dentists at the practice, which is perfect if your own dental practice is unable to offer such treatments. However, we believe we can take much better care of your overall dental health if you choose to look after all of your dental needs because the dentist and hygienist can work together to deliver a better level of treatment.
What will the hygienist do differently to my usual dentist’s ‘scale and polish’?
The scale and polish the dentists give you may be very superficial, and they cannot spend the time being as thorough as you might need or want them to be. They will also not spend much time on stain removal. The hygienist will clean much more deeply and completely in comparison.
Will it hurt?
Treatment isn’t usually painful, but the hygienist can help ease any discomfort you feel with an anaesthetic gel.
How often should I see the hygienist?
If your gums are generally healthy, we suggest you visit the hygienist every 6 months. If you have a more advanced disease, the hygienist may recommend that you come in and see her every 3-4 months.

What an asset to Huntingdon and beyond. A Dentist who was taking on new NHS patients and whom my wife and I were lucky enough to be signed with.So from my initial phone call to populating the Practice Form to my first appointment was very easy and painless.Being greeted in the Practice by the lovely, friendly and chatty receptionist, Chloe was smashing. Chloe's infectious smile was captivating and certainly befits the Practice name, SMILES.Then in to meet my designated dentist, again lovely who introduced herself to me and who I have to say, was so easy to get on with.We had a chat about some of my health history and then it was down to business. So after a poking and prodding and a few wiggles of a couple of my loose teeth, I will be going back for a follow up chat and any subsequent treatment.Visiting here today was such a great time, usually we all hate visiting any dentist but I was pleasantly surprised and I was not phased or nervous at all during my visit. That's down to the friendliness and professionalism of all the staff. I have since been back to the dentist for a follow up appointment and walking into the reception and seeing the lovely smiling Chloe again shows that the first time I met her and seeing that smile wasn't a fluke, Chloe is genuinely that nice and ever so friendly. Smiles have got it all, a happy, friendly receptionist, friendly staff and ever so much friendly dentists. We are going to enjoy being patients in this practice. So to sum up my review of this Dental Practice, Excellent and whether you are NHS or Private Patients of this Dental Practice you know you are in good hands. Thanks Chloe, (the Face and Smile of the Practice) ☺️, you're the best.
The interior was stunning (bonus), the team all very welcoming and polite. The dentist took time to explain everything in detail and was very good with my child.

Lovely 1st visit to Huntingdon Smiles. Very pleasant clinic. Staff are polite and professional. What a miracle to find an NHS dentist in the county. Hopefully they’ll stay treating NHS patients and we won’t be expected to transfer to their private patients list.
